​Tanker Brokers specialise in the chartering of tankers, which requires specific skill sets, different to that of dry cargo broking. It is common to find Tanker Brokers specialising in crude oil, gas, oil products or chemical tankers.

 

This particular role requires someone who knows their industry and is very strong when it comes to negotiating contracts on behalf of their clients. To succeed as a Tanker Broker, excellent numeracy skills are very important as well as a personality that is driven to excel in their field.

What does a Tanker Broker job description include?

  • Depending upon the job on offer, you may or may not be in charge of a team of people. The job of a Tanker Broker is deleted pressurised and requires someone who is dedicated and determined.
  • You will be required to negotiate the best possible rate for clients and to present proposals detailing how prices have been achieved and what the profit margin is for the client.
  • A Tanker Broker may also act in a consulting capacity offering clients guidance on proposed shipping ventures, investment opportunities and market trends.
  • Dealing with Spot and/or time charters, crude oil, chemical tankers and gas tankers.
  • You will coordinate with tanker chartering and operations departments ensuring maximum space utilisation of a vessel, number of port calls and ensure the voyage financial results are as predicted.
  • The Tanker Broker negotiates all contracts,
  • You will be required to establish and maintain a global network in support of your work.

Key skills and qualifications of a Tanker Broker:

  • You may be required to hold a degree, but if you can demonstrate an excellent service record and sufficient experience this may not be required.
  • At least 5 years minimum experience within brokering, preferably Tanker Brokering will usually be required, but again, depending upon the job on offer, this may be less.
  • A Tanker Broker must have excellent numeracy skills, be methodical and be able to problem solve.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills are required as communication is key to this role.
  • Working within ship brokering is a very intensive career choice as the hours are long and you may be required to work weekends and so this role is suitable for people who have a very strong work ethic.
  • A Tanker Broker needs strong commercial sense and the ability to research markets thoroughly for their clients to ensure sound market intelligence and advice is presented at all times.
  • You must be able to use the Microsoft Office suite.
