While searching for jobs is very exciting for many, it can also quickly become a candidate’s worst nightmare. Online recruitment processes can provide many opportunities for job seekers, yet also make them an easy target for recruitment scammers. These types of scams are becoming increasingly advanced.
Recruitment scams are carried out by people who impersonate a recruiter and typically use a job ad posted on a genuine job site to lure in potential job seekers. These scams are set up to extract as much personal information and/or money from the job seeker as possible. They can be extremely convincing, with even fake company websites set up to deceive unsuspecting job seekers.
Why Recruitment Scams Are Increasing
With more jobs being advertised online than ever before, recruitment fraud is becoming an increasing problem. Recruitment scammers are exploiting the vast number of people using online recruitment sites by impersonating employers and recruitment agencies in order to extract money from unsuspecting job seekers.
There are many different types of recruitment scams, most of which are set up by individuals who have researched companies and their recruitment agencies. These individuals often create websites, advertise jobs on online job boards and contact candidates through professional networking sites such as LinkedIn.
These scams can be very sophisticated, and falling victim to one could not only cost you money but also lead to identity theft. At an already stressful time during your job search, this can create even greater difficulties.
Common Warning Signs of Recruitment Fraud
Beware of job advertisements that ask for payment to apply for a job. Legitimate recruitment agencies never charge candidates to apply for jobs or to be considered for employment opportunities. If you are asked for payment, financial details or a money transfer at any point during the recruitment process, it is a huge red flag and you should stop contact immediately.
You should also look closely at the recruiter’s profile. Are they a seasoned recruiter with a professional history and a large number of connections? Is their profile complete and up to date with a recent photograph? Legitimate recruiters typically have complete and professional profiles. Be wary of recruiters who provide little information about themselves or the company they represent.
Recruitment opportunities that look too good to be true may also be scams. Examples include extremely high salaries, guaranteed jobs, vague job descriptions or roles that appear to offer substantial rewards for very little work.
Checking Emails and Online Communications
Scams are now commonly distributed by email. The sender’s email address may look almost identical to the real company’s email address, often containing a slight misspelling, a different domain name or additional characters. Always check the full email address rather than relying on the display name alone.
Check for spelling mistakes in the domain name and any unusual characters. The email address should correspond with the company’s official website. If in doubt, search for the company online, visit its official website and use the contact details listed there to verify the communication.
How to Assess a Recruitment Website
Be aware that a professional-looking website does not necessarily mean that a company is legitimate. Many scam websites are designed to mirror genuine company websites in order to deceive job seekers.
If the website appears new, contains poor-quality written content, duplicated job adverts or very little information about the business, it is worth carrying out further research before sharing any personal information.
What to Do If You Suspect a Scam
Firstly, stop communication. Do not send any further information and do not click on any links. Report the suspected scam to the company being impersonated and, in the UK, to Action Fraud.
If you have already provided sensitive information or made a payment, contact your bank or card provider immediately and report the incident to the relevant authorities.
