This is a unique opportunity to work both on-site and in the field on complex, high-value projects, handling and protecting some of the world’s most precious artworks and museum objects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design crate structures, identify pressure points in artefacts, and create protection solutions
- Ensure all wood structures meet design specifications, quality standards, and durability
- Read technical drawings and job sheets
- Operate woodworking machinery (saws, routers, planers)
- Adjust machine settings for cutting, planning, shaping, turning, and sanding
- Repair and refurbish wooden products (sanding, polishing, varnishing, staining)
- Mount backing materials and internal supports for secure crating
- Determine tools and machinery for efficient crate construction
- Construct museum-standard crates, interior fit-outs, and packing solutions
- Install artworks and objects on-site
- Manage the production workshop and lead a team of craters
- Oversee productivity and workflow
- Complete pricing estimates and manage project costs and expenses
- Order materials in a timely manner for projects
- Provide and maintain a safe working environment and ensure maintenance of all equipment
- Enforce compliance with safe work practices
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience in crate construction, woodworking and fine art logistics
- Strong understanding of museum-standard packing
- Experience handling fine art and/or museum objects
- Workshop management or team leadership experience
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and manage complex builds
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Valid driver’s licence (preferred)
