Chinese Art Specialist

Job Description

Our client, an international and prestigious Auction House is looking for a fluent Mandarin speaking Chinese Specialist to join their London team. 

The successful applicant must be a competent cataloguer, valuer and pro-active business seeker, with exceptional organisation and analytical skills. 

The key focus of this role is to provide knowledge of Chinese Art, whilst providing excellent support to the department. 

Key Duties:
  • Maintain and support the continued development of a database of clients for the department, including both buyers and sellers
  • Promote new business prospects for the department
  • Keep in touch with long-term collectors to promote more transactions with the company, whether as buyers or sellers
  • Perform auctioneer duties as needed across all categories
  • Help the senior staff create an advertising and marketing plan within the allocated budgets to support the department's business development and sales efforts
  • To successfully complete, as and when necessary, the valuation of customers' property, both within and outside of the office
  • Create condition reports for artwork that will be sold
  • Locating, analysing, and cataloguing artwork for public and private sales
  • Create proposal documents for sales pitches
  • Offering stand-by assistance with shipping contracts and enquires
  • General administrative duties to ensure the department runs smoothly
  • Assist the team's cataloguers in order to foster their growth and market awareness
  • Assist the group in creating the catalogues to guarantee prompt delivery to printers
  • Assist with exhibition events around the world as needed
  • Continue to be informed of the tactics employed by our rivals in order to keep this department's competitive position in the market
  • Have knowledge and genuine interest in Chinese art 
  • Fluency in Mandarin and English 
  • Adequate market and trend awareness 
  • Degree holder or equivalent
  • Proven business acumen and valuation skills 
  • Network of contacts, or willingness to build a contact portfolio 
  • Functional knowledge of the Auction Process 
  • Ability to work to deadlines
